She has won her first Filmfare Award, Nandi Award and CineMAA Award for the titular character Arundhati. Anushka was recently seen in Size Zero and will soon be seen in Baahubali-The Conclusion.

Anushka made her acting debut in Puri Jagannath’s 2005 Telugu film Super, where she featured alongside Akkineni Nagarjuna and Ayesha Takia. The film received mixed reviews, but IndiaGlitz said “The two girls, Ayesha and Anushka, are cool and chic. Their angles and curves provide all the glamour and keep you engrossed. What about their acting? Well, they are in this film for it and Sify stated, “The sexy girls Ayesha and Anushka show off their bodies.”

The same year, she acted in another film Maha Nandi, opposite Srihari and Sumanth which also received mixed reviews. IndiaGlitz said, “Anushka looks comely —and that is what she seems to be in for.” but added, “The script has been stitched and the seams look frayed,Sify stated that it “starts promisingly with a racy first half but goes awry and the tempo slackens post interval.” and added, “Anushka looks ravishing thanks to Vasu’s camera which is a major plus for the film.

Anushka next release was Selvaraghavan’s fantasy adventure film Irandam Ulagam opposite Arya,[45] that saw her playing a dual role again, the third time in her career. Anushka played Ramya, a doctor and Varna, a high spirited, warrior-like character, in a parallel world. Rediff wrote, “Anushka not only shares equal screen space with Arya, but also plays quite a significant role. In fact, the story revolves around her and she has performed admirably”.

Behindwoods wrote, “As the shy doctor Ramya and as the fierce warrior Varna, Anushka is simply at her best showcasing a wide range of emotions and stunts. It is her performance that stands as a pivot for the rest of the story to take shape”.[47] Her latest release is the Tamil film Lingaa opposite Rajinikanth, released in December 2014.She starred opposite Rajnikanth in Lingaa which opened to mixed reviews.

In 2015, She starred opposite Ajith Kumar in Yennai Arindhaal which opened to positive reviews. Her second release in 2015, is the first part of Baahubali directed by S. S. Rajamouli which became one of the top grossing films in the Indian film industry. The Hindu noted that, Anushka Shetty is gutsy to take on such a role and emotes through her powerful eyes. Her third release in 2015 was Gunashekar’s bilingual Rudhramadevi in which she portrays the titular role of Kakatiya dynasty queen Rudrama Devi opposite Rana Daggubati and Allu Arjun.

Lack of sponsors forces squash gold medallist to offer kidney for sale.

Squash champion Ravi Dixit, a gold medallist in the 2010 Asian junior championships, has offered one of his kidneys for sale on social media to fund his participation in next month’s South Asian Games and subsequent tournaments.

ravi dixitThe 23-year-old player from Dhampur in Uttar Pradesh took the drastic step after he was unable to find a sponsor and posted the offer online — a kidney for Rs 8 lakh. His offer immediately found traction and triggered outrage on Facebook and Twitter.
“I need at least Rs 1 lakh to participate in the South Asian Games but have not been able to find any sponsor. So, I have decided to sell by kidney for Rs 8 lakh so that I can participate in other tournaments as well for the rest of the year,” Dixit told Hindustan Times from Chennai where he is currently preparing for the South Asian Games.

Dixit has been playing squash for the past 10 years and is one of the four players selected for the Games in Guwahati. He said he depends on prize money to meet his training needs.

One of his Facebook posts, which was later deleted, said: “Even after winning so many medals and representing India so many times, I do not get any support to take my squash to the national and international levels. Dhampur Sugar Mill has supported me but how long will they continue to support me? … I have not been able to arrange enough money to fund my campaign for the games. I have lost my determination.”

Other than the gold at the Asian junior championships, Dixit has won many national and international laurels.
He has been getting financial support from Dhampur Sugar Mill, where his father is a class IV employee, but it is not enough for him to support his career.
“It is difficult for us to support the family solely on my husband’s income. The mill has been very generous in its support to Ravi’s career but we are too embarrassed to ask for more help,” his mother, Sarvesh, said thanking the company for its support.
After Dixit offered to sell his kidney, some politicians in UP have now come forward to help the player.
Minister Moolchand Chauhan said he would talk to the family and take up the matter with chief minister Akhilesh Yadav. “I am surprised that such a talented player is auctioning his kidney. All possible help will be given to him,” he said.

BJP leader and a former MLA Ashok Kumar Rana also assured the player of help.

Lionel Messi’s latest Ballon d’Or win comes with the player at his peak

download (1)

ZURICH: The only surprise was over what Lionel Messi was wearing as he picked up his record fifth Ballon D’Or.

This time, there was no notorious loud jacket, just a traditional black dinner suit to go with another piece of history from the Argentine.

In the hours before the ceremony, which took placed in a gold-draped room in Zurich’s Kongreshaus, even Cristiano Ronaldo was admitting that Messi was the likely and deserving winner. There was no bitterness as the Portuguese spoke with humour and admiration about the quality of the Barcelona playmaker’s left foot.

Later, when he took the podium, Messi was his usual reserved self but also admitted to a hint of envy over how he had to watch Ronaldo pick up the award for the last two years.

“It is a very special moment for me to be back here on this stage, winning again another Ballon d’Or after being there in the audience watching Cristiano win,” Messi said.

No more. Messi has back in his hands an award he has made his own after a year in which he ascended to arguably greater levels than we have ever before seen from him.

2015 might well have been his peak, and it certainly wouldn’t have taken the 300-plus voters much thought to select the 28-year-old as winner ahead of second-placed Ronaldo and third-placed Neymar.

While Messi’s highlight reel sometimes feels endless, you can pinpoint one moment of magic — one in which he demonstrated preternatural thought and physical skill — to perfectly sum up his year.

Rewind to May 6 at the Camp Nou. With 10 minutes remaining of Barcelona’s Champions League semifinal first leg against Bayern Munich, Messi collected the ball on the edge of the Bayern penalty area.

He took four touches to set himself up, one more to sit down Jerome Boateng, leaving the defender clumsily stumbling onto the ground, and then another to do the same to Manuel Neuer by gloriously chipping the goalkeeper.

The instant-classic sequence was gloriously immortalized almost immediately on the internet, with GIFs and vines doing the rounds. Corkscrewing Boateng into the turf provided the laugh track, but the way Messi chipped Neuer was truly something special.

It wasn’t just the ease with which Messi executed such a difficult finish. There was also the split-second calculation he had made, as he revealed afterwards in the Camp Nou mixed zone.

“I thought [Neuer] would cover my [left] foot,” Messi said with a smile. “So, I went the other way.”

In doing so, Messi also ensured events went another way to a fateful moment against the same goalkeeper the previous year. With the score at 0-0 in the 2014 World Cup final, the Argentina captain had been presented with a similar chance, only to end that face-off with Neuer by shooting the ball wide.

Ten months later, he instantly recalled how the German moved that day in Rio, and that memory brought a very different outcome.

The image of a forlorn Messi looking at Germany’s World Cup captured perhaps the lowest moment of his career, but he responded with what might just have been his best-ever season. Given his prior achievements, which included seven league titles and three Champions Leagues, not to mention four Ballon d’Or trophies, that is really saying something.

While Messi capped 2015 with the sport’s highest honour, the year did not start well. In January, he seemed at odds with Barcelona coach Luis Enrique and generally fed up with his lot; a 1-0 defeat at Real Sociedad, in which he started on the bench, was seen as a potential tipping point for the club.

Luis Enrique kept his job, though, and from that point Messi focused in the most positive way possible, hiding any discontent he may have been feeling. He saw a specialist about his fitness and lost over six kilograms before leading Barcelona to a Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble.

Messi has long been a single-minded goal machine but, in 2015, he became the complete player. Some of his dribbles and assists were as glorious as many of his goals, and there is now a strong argument that he is the best passer in the world, as well as the best player.

download (1)

That match against Bayern is again the perfect reference point. Messi followed those two goals with the flourish of a fine through ball from which Neymar effectively sealed the entire tie

In the Champions League final against Juventus, with the score 1-1, Messi again displayed one of the qualities that defined him as a youth by embarking on a blistering run that broke open the game and set up the match-winner for Luis Suarez.

Messi didn’t score in that Berlin showpiece, but he did get the goal that won La Liga for Barcelona and also netted twice in the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao. His first, a mazy run that began on the right touchline and saw him dribble past four defenders, earned him a nomination for the Puskas Award.

It was yet another illustration of football perfection and 2015 could have been the perfect year, had Ezequiel Lavezzi scored the 90th-minute chance in the Copa America final against Chile that Messi — of course — set up.

Argentina’s eventual defeat on penalties was a negative, but it still says much that Messi came so close to what would have been an unprecedented clean sweep of trophies for club and country.

Even so, Messi still showed he is so clearly ahead of everyone else in the world — once again.

It’s no longer a secret that “Prison Break” is coming back to bring brand new episodes for season 5. It was announced back in August 2015 by Fox Studios. The revival was announced back in August last year by Fox Studios.

Jallikattu on hold: SC stays govt notification to allow bull Taming.

The sport that has been an integral part of Pongal festivities was banned by the Supreme Court in 2014, following demands from rights groups who pointed to animal cruelty and human deaths during the event.

The Supreme Court stayed on Tuesday a central government notification that paved the way for a return of the banned bull taming sport Jallikattu, effectively scuttling plans of staging the event during Pongal celebrations in Tamil Nadu later this week.

The top court also issued notices to the Centre, Tamil Nadu and other states where the controversial sport is played, days after the environment ministry issued new guidelines that permitted the popular event to go ahead, overriding protests from animal rights activists and the law ministry.

The sport that has been an integral part of Pongal festivities was banned by the Supreme Court in 2014, following demands from rights groups who pointed to animal cruelty and human deaths during the event. The new norms triggered howls of protests and animal welfare organisations — including the animal welfare board – filed a clutch of petitions in the court.

But the Centre objected to the pleas, saying no fundamental right of the petitioners were violated and questioned the maintainability of the petitions. The court also issued a notice on whether the petitions could be heard or not.
Both the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government assured the court that the new notification underlined safety measures and precautions to be taken during the festival.

Under the rules, permission has to be given by the district collector or magistrate and bullock cart races must be held on a proper track. Bulls, once they leave the enclosure, have to be tamed within a radial distance of 15 metres, the government order said.

The new norms came after a concerted political push by parties in the poll-bound Tamil Nadu, where the banned sport has a strong connection with thousands of people who view it as a part of their culture

Chief minister J Jayalalithaa had written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, backing the sport, which wasn’t held last year for the first time in decades.

Pathankot attack: Pakistan orders probe & raids, peace talks may get delayed as Delhi waits

Pathankot air base attacks

The arrests led Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to order a Joint Investigation Team of IB, Inter-Services Intelligence, Military Intelligence, Federal Investigation Agency and Police to thoroughly probe the Pathankot attack links to Pakistan.

Pathankot terror attack: Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif has already said that a transparent investigation will be made and those involved will not be spared.

With National Security Advisor Ajit K Doval leaving for Paris late Monday night and Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar in Male, New Delhi is likely to take a “political call” on the proposed Foreign Secretary-level talks with Pakistan “in the next 48 hours”, government sources said. There is a possibility of the talks being postponed by “a few days or, at most, a few weeks”, a source added.

Meanwhile, Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif ordered the formation of a high-profile joint investigation team (JIT) to get more information about the Pathankot airbase attackers, a media report said Monday.

Pakistani authorities also carried out raids in in Gujranwala, Jhelum and Bahawalpur districts, during which an unspecified number of people were arrested, intelligence officials said. The raids, sources said, were seen as “positive signs” by the Indian establishment.

However, reports in the Pakistani media claiming that phone numbers used by Pakistani handlers were “unregistered” were met with disbelief in New Delhi. “According to our information, Pakistan’s telecom rules do not allow phone numbers to be activated till biometrics are captured. How is it possible that the numbers are unregistered?” said a source.

“The leads were shared by the NSA and the security agencies are best equipped to assess the progress made by the Pakistan’s establishment in their investigations. So, by Wednesday, a call will be taken on the Foreign Secretary-level talks,” said a source.

Doval is going to France as part of preparations ahead of French President Francois Hollande’s visit to India for the Republic Day celebrations. Jaishankar went to Maldives on Monday and will be headed to Colombo on Tuesday, before returning to Delhi on Wednesday.

“It is likely that there will be a conference call between top officials and the political leadership on Tuesday or Wednesday to decide on the future course of action,” an official tasked with preparatory work for the Foreign Secretary .

External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, meanwhile, met Home Minister Rajnath Singh Monday afternoon — a meeting described by officials as “routine”.

In Islamabad, the decision to form the JIT, comprising officials from the Intelligence Bureau, Inter-Services Intelligence and Military Intelligence, was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Sharif recently, Pakistani newspaper The Express Tribune said.

Sharif “is taking an active role in getting to the bottom of the Pathankot incident”, a source from the Prime Minister’s House was quoted as saying by the paper.

“He also discussed the issue with Army Chief Gen Raheel Sharif and took him on board about the decision to form a JIT,” the source added.

“This investigation will be a major test of the prime minister to move Pakistan-India relationship forward and to break the cycle of off-again on-again talks between the two neighbours,” the source said.

HBO gives season six of Game of Thrones and official premiere date

It’s the most pirated show for years now, and feels like one of the most anticipated shows season to season: it’s HBO’s adaptation of George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novel series called Game of Thrones. You know it, you love it, you’ve been obsessing about when you get to find out what happened to Sansa after she jumped over that very high wall. Fret no more, weary traveler of the Narrow Sea of the off-season, we can see the shore beyond! Game of Thrones season six will premiere Sunday, April 24.

jonsnow-590x330The finale of last season of Game of Thrones got the highest ratings of the entire series by that point with 8.11 million viewers, even though it aired opposite some NBA Finals game.

It’s unsurprising to those following Song of Ice and Fire fandom because that episode’s place in the series meta narrative made it exciting to all types of fans. For those who just watched the show, the fifth season’s tail end was riding on the Jon Snow high that was the finale battle sequence of the episode “Hardhome” where Jon barely saved some wildlings from the oncoming White Walkers, the Night’s King, and his army of Wights. For the people who have read fifth Martin book, A Dance With Dragons, the show was finally catching up with the novel’s narratives, which meant a major event was about to go down that has also been left unresolved in the book:Jon Snow’s apparent death.

Game-of-Thrones-303195Since the show went off the air at a high point in terms of exposure, book readers and show watchers were finally asking the same questions by the millions. HBO and A Song of Ice and Fire’s publishers hatched a plan to get Martin to finish the sixth book in time for it to be published before Game of Thrones premiered the new season. This was supposed to the let the author conclude what could very well be his final cliffhanger considering how fast the show is consuming the chronology of the novels.

game-thrones-season-5Sadly, Martin couldn’t finish in time. The author broke the news to the fans himself by blogging about it, but by then HBO had released a teaser for Game of Thrones’ upcoming season — a forty-one second teaser that includes the phrase “the past is already written, the ink is dry.” Now we’ll forever be wondering if the inclusion of that line was a subtle hint that the book was supposed to be done by the time the season came out, or if it was placed over video of Kit Harrington as an alive Jon Snow to continue to troll audiences with the question of his death and/or magical resurrection.

‘Sherlock: The Abominable Bride’ Recap

sherlock..It’s rare that a series gets to do an adaptation of its own adaptation, but that’s exactly what writers and creators Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss achieved with the Christmas Special episode Sherlock: The Abominable Bride. Subverting their own subversion, they catapulted Sherlock Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman) back to the time of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s source material, in order to tell a one-off Victorian tale that was, prior to its premiere, shrouded in mystery.

And now, of course, it all makes sense (right?) and that reality is a little disappointing. “It’s all a dream” (or a drug-induced mind-palace-dwelling hallucination) is one of the most groan-worthy ways for any story to conclude, and even though Sherlock: The Abominable Bride ping-ponged back and forth through time, it felt like too neat of a cheat.

aaAt the start, The Abominable Bride was absolutely delightful as an alt-history, meta-infused version of the Sherlock we know and love. Back in the 1880s, with Watson as the storyteller and Sherlock Holmes sporting the iconic deerstalker, there were some fun twists on the Sherlock-Watson origin story from this iteration’s premiere (all the way to the mirrored, vintage title sequence). Mycroft (Gatiss), as some sort of suicidal balloon, was also a silly and fun changeup (and more like the original stories), as was the usually quiet and retiring Molly Hooper (Louise Brealey) turning up as a curt and confident crossdresser. Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs), though, remained her timeless self, and Lestrade (Rupert Graves) didn’t change much either. The show also gave a few moments to some other memorable cast from the past, like Anderson (Jonathan Aris) and Irene Adler (Lara Pulver, in a locket photo), though only in passing.

sherlock  All of this was much more fun than the actual case, the solution of which was telegraphed fairly early through Mary’s (Amanda Abbington) arrival at Sherlock’s flat. As a mysterious, cloaked figure dressed in black, she wasthe dark shadow of the murderous Bride dressed in white, and the episode’s heavy-handed themes of gender inequality set the stage for what exactly? A feminist death cult?

Though Mycroft and Sherlock both explain away the women’s killer intentions (and successes) as “progress,” one can’t help but be disappointed by the implications. Still, the real sin of The Abominable Bride was that it just wasn’t a particularly good case. And part of it may have been because of its truncated timeline, due to the show’s other ghost.

I will be the first to stand in praise of Andrew Scott’s weird and wonderful portrayal of Professor Moriarty, but the show has made him into something of an albatross. By killing him off (which perhaps happened too soon), the series was left without its principal villain and foil. And yet, Sherlock also won’t let him go. Moriarty is best used sparingly, be it as a mastermind or a spectre, and The Abominable Bride was much too indulgent with his presence. Knowing, ultimately, that he really is dead (that it’s not a trick on Sherlock) made his reappearance feel more like a trick on us, and one that won’t hold up well on rewatching. The idea that Moriarty still haunts Sherlock’s mind is an interesting one, and Watson being the one to “save” Sherlock was a nice touch, but the theatrics in between felt overwrought (with the time perhaps better spent on other things).

watsonSherlock is at its best when it’s snappy, clever, and fun, which its first act achieved in spades (the sign language scene was a particular highlight, as were the parlor scenes). If the Christmas Special had just stuck to being a weird, unexplained alternative history of our cast, it would have been just fine. (As it was, the Victorian setting was an opportunity to pack in almost every Sherlock Holmes reference possible — a nice set of easter eggs for fans). Using it as a bridge between Seasons 3 and 4 didn’t work quite as well, though, even as tantalizing as some of the Moriarty twists first seemed.

Still, there are some interesting portends for fans to pick apart leading up to the new season: Moriarty is dead, but his influence lingers (and Sherlock knows how), and a glimpse into Mycroft’s notebook divulged a few points of interest into what might be coming next (a reference to Sherlock’s childhood dog Redbeard, as well as ”611174,” “Vernet,” and “Scarlet Roll”).

sherlock (1)

Back to Bride – Cumberbatch, Freeman, and the entire cast were all as charming and lovable as ever, of course, and managed to elevate scenes that were otherwise miscalculations. They were ultimately let down, though, by the Special’s time-jumping structure, and its endless fascination with Moriarty. As interesting as that relationship can be, it can’t hold a candle to the one between Sherlock and Watson. After Watson booted Moriarty off the cliff, he commented, “it was my turn.” As well it should be. Sherlock then dove off the cliff himself, and back into the present. There’s no more time to dwell on the past. The game is afoot.

Lenovo, Google join hands for Project Tango

Chinese computing firm Lenovo said on Friday it has partnered with Google to launch a new smartphone that can see and map out surroundings with help from the US-based company’s 3D technology named Project Tango.

To be available in summer 2016, the new smartphone turns the screen into a window that can overlay digital information and objects onto the real world.

Google’s Project Tango is a technology platform that uses advanced computer vision, depth sensing, and motion tracking to create on-screen 3D experiences, allowing users to explore their physical environment via their device.

“To break new ground in today’s hypercompetitive smartphone and tablet industries, we must take innovation risks it’s the only way to truly change the way people use mobile technology,” Lenovo Senior V-P and President Mobile Business Group Chen Xudong said.

Together with Google, Lenovo is breaking down silos by working across mobile hardware and software, he added.

Interestingly, Lenovo had acquired Motorola Mobility from Google in late 2014, though the Internet giant retained the mobile firm’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group.

As part of the partnership, Lenovo is also inviting developers to help grow the budding Project Tango app ecosystem.

Developers can submit their Project Tango app proposals to win funding and getting the app featured on Lenovo’s upcoming smartphone. The submission period closes on February 15.

Johnny Lee, Project Tango Lead at Google, said that by working with Lenovo, Google will be able to make Project Tango more accessible to users and developers all over the world.
